Things are moving ahead with the Getty Images-Flickr collection that was announced last July. [Aside: Is it just us, or does that seem like a hundred years ago?] A few notes about that:
- Photographers are getting invitations from Getty to submit their work to the Flickr collection. Our friend and fellow blogger Rachel Hulin has an interesting post about this. She writes that she's been tapped by Getty monitors on Flickr and invited to submit several of her photos to the new service. (Note the curious array photos they've selected!) Hulin, having written critically of Getty Images before, wonders what to do. She writes: "Readers, help me." Go help her!
- Meanwhile, TechCrunch has posted screen grabs from a test version of a Flickr stock marketplace that never saw the light of day. We have been long-time skeptics of the idea Flickr would launch its own stock agency. (Flickr is good at running a social network, but it would require a big investment for the company to be ready to handle the legal and logistical headaches of licensing intellectual property.) Until now, we had no idea Flickr had gotten so far in its plans. Blogger Paul Melcher labels Flickr Stock "The project that Getty killed."
- And looking at the big picture, remember Flickr is part of a huge Internet company that may be on the verge of breaking apart. We're talking about Yahoo!, which just named a new CEO, Carol Bartz. Most of the stories about Bartz's appointment indicate that Yahoo! is in trouble and has to do something fast, such as sell itself off in pieces. USA Today reports: "Some investors have lobbied for a breakup of the Internet giant so that it can more nimbly compete with Google and Microsoft." There isn't much solid information about this. We don't even know if Flickr is making money, and if it is, how much. Yahoo! seldom mentions Flickr in its financial disclosures, which makes us think it's pretty small compared to the overall business. Here's a question to ponder: In a Yahoo! breakup, who gets Flickr? We know our guess.
