The U.S. Airways Flight 1549 crash and rescue in the Hudson River may be the most photographed aviation accident in history.
The star of the early coverage is a Florida tourist named Janis Krums of Sarasota, Florida, who was on one of the ferry boats in the Hudson River in New York when the plane crashed. Krums posted a photo from his iPhone, Twittered about the crash and did an interview with MSNBC. Here's his Twitter feed.
The doomed plane made a water landing this afternoon in the frigid Hudson River in New York in view of many buildings in Manhattan and New Jersey – including the Reuters skyscraper in Times Square. Reuters photographer Brendan McDermid and photo editor Gary Hershorn snagged some of the first dramatic images of this rescue.
News reports say both the plane's engines failed after it struck a flock of geese. Incredibly, everyone on board the plane is safe.
The service Krums used to publish his iPhone photo, Twitpic,
was quickly overwhelmed and has been down for hours. However, the photo
swept like wildfire through many other sites, including The Smoking Gun and Silicon Alley Insider.
On Flickr, many many members have published pictures of the accident shot from vantage points around Manhattan and New Jersey. See some of their photos below.
